The Ghost at the Table

'Families are toxic...'

Thanksgiving, New England, and writer Cynthia has been persuaded by elder sister Frances to come and visit for the autumn holiday. Cynthia is reluctant to join in this family reunion because she'd rather not see their long-estranged father. Yet Frances is adamant that they must all meet to clear the air - poisoned ever since their mother died when they were children.

But Cynthia has her own ideas about how to use this family occasion. It's time to lift the lid on some unwelcome home truths about what happened all those years ago. And this time her daddy's feelings are not to be spared ...

Reviews

Countless modern novels tackle the breakdown of previously equal relationships between men and women following the arrival of children, but few do it with the sparkle and perception of Broadbent

—— Guardian

This stunning debut... is not to be missed... very funny, absorbing and moving, this comes highly recommended

—— Good Book Guide

Peppered with sharp observations... refreshingly original

—— Tom Boncza-Tomaszewski , Independent on Sunday

Acutely and wittily observed

—— Kate Saunders , The Times

An entertaining take on the mores of contemporary society

—— Time Out

The writing is subtle, funny and refreshingly superior...Recommended for young urbanites

—— Andrew Morrod , Daily Mail

A delightful first novel about a young Indian called Mousumi visiting her sophisticated relations in London ... A coming-of-age story with a difference.

—— Oxford Times

Hugely gratifying in the way that only Cooper can be

—— Mail on Sunday

Triumphantly good

—— The Sunday Times

The prospect of Jilly's return, with a novel set in the glamorous international art world and promising "oodles of bad behaviour, intrigue, passion, tears and laughter", will surely cheer all but the most misanthropic

—— Bookseller

There is enough plot for several novels here (enough sex for dozens), all vividly conveyed in the author's excitable style... Her many fans will not be disappointed

—— Literary Review

This modern day mythical fantasy is Anne Rice on an epic scale, a hugely imagined world. A chiller thriller from cold of Russia, this one's been selling like hot cakes around the world
