'One of the comic masterpieces' Daily Telegraph

Henderson Dores is an Englishman in New York - and completely out of his depth.

He should be concentrating on his job as an art assessor, but his complicated personal life keeps intruding. And that's before we even get to his sense of alienation, of being a fish out of water. For Henderson is a shy man lost in a country of extraverts and weirdos. Subway poets, loony millionaires, Bible-bashers and sharp-suited hoods stalk him wherever he goes. But it is only when he's sent to America's deep South to examine a rare collection of paintings that matters take a life-threatening turn. Still, if it doesn't kill you, they say it can only make you stronger . . .

Reviews

A novel that has soul, which Saramago offers to his readers with all his witty, intelligent, tender and magical generosity

—— Samantha Harvey , Independent

Offers an unearthly, muted beauty; a freedom from the obvious, the ideological and trivial; an atmosphere of profound serenity, and a benevolent humor

—— Literary Review

Both delightful and unsettling which is perhaps the mark of true literature

—— Anthony Daniels , Sunday Telegraph

A tantalizing novel...shifting and teasing, full of metaphorical labyrinths and false trails

—— Herald

It is the marriage of the living and the dying...that so strongly characterizes the writing of Jose Saramago

—— New Statesman

The Swedish Academy's citation called his novels "parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony." It is a description which perfectly captures his latest novel

—— The Times

Utterly tragic and compelling. It's one of the greatest modern American novels

—— Tatler

Philip Roth’s American Pastoral is one of those books you know is going to change you in some profound way shortly after you start reading it and it did for me. I read it last summer and nothing has quite surpassed it for me since. A very painful read.

—— Angea Nagle , Irish Times

[American Pastoral] is gorgeously written with passages of breathtaking beauty filled with wisdom and pathos

—— Sarfraz Manzoor , Week
