Hell's Angels

With 'long hair in the wind, beards and bandanas flapping, earrings, chain whips . . . and Harleys flashing chrome', the Hell's Angels erupted into 1960s America paralysing whole towns with fear. Determined to discover the truths behind the terrifying reputation of those marauding biker gangs, Hunter S. Thompson spent a year on the road with the Angels, documenting his hair-raising experiences with Charger Charley, Big Frank, Little Jesus and the Gimp. Hell's Angels was the result: a masterpiece of underground reportage whose free-wheeling, impressionistic style created the legend of Gonzo journalism, and made Thompson's name as the wild man of American writing.

Reviews

One of his greatest novels

—— Independent

This is in some ways an implacably sunny book, but any temptations Faulkner may have felt toward nostalgia are tempered by the clear eye through which he always viewed the world...written in prose at once distinctly Faulknerian yet entirely accessible....a lovely book, funny and touching and Faulkner to the core

—— Washington Post

'His spectacular inventiveness makes the Discworld series one of the perennial joys of modern fiction'

—— Mail on Sunday

'The great Terry Pratchett, whose wit is metaphysical, who creates an energetic and lively secondary world, who has a multifarious genius for strong parody ... who deals with death with startling originality. Who writes amazing sentences'

—— New York Times

—— Isobel Montgomery , Guardian

Those childhood ghosts which linger into adulthood are sensitively conjured by Michelle de Kretser... This search for an animal becomes a ravishing search through the fears, hopes and attachments that make us human

—— Anita Sethi , Independent on Sunday

Told with subtlety

—— Nicola Barr , Guardian

Rose Tremain is an old-fashioned writer, in the best of ways: we care about her characters' sorrows and hope for their happiness

—— Daily Telegraph

Tremain allows us to see our country's wonders and failings as if for the first time

—— Glamour

The Wodehouse wit should be registered at Police HQ as a chemical weapon

—— Kathy Lette

Witty and effortlessly fluid. His books are laugh-out-loud funny
